Redmond Town Center Receives Second Arts Award; Mall Recognized by City Hall for Support of Arts Community

REDMOND, Wash., July 13 /PRNewswire/ -- On the heels of a recent international award, Redmond Town Center has been awarded its second arts award. The City of Redmond's Arts Commission named Redmond Town Center the 1999 Redmond Volunteer Arts Award recipient in the Patrons Division on July 6. The award follows Redmond's recent accomplishment when it was honored for innovative design at the 23rd International Design and Development Awards Program sponsored by the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC).

Redmond Town Center was chosen to receive the award in recognition of exemplary support of the Redmond Arts Community. Presented at the Redmond City Council meeting, the award is an original artwork glass fan, designed by local artist Fred Munro.

''Redmond Town Center has served as a patron of the arts since it first opened,'' said Christopher Berns of the Arts Commission. ''The Center has created a public art environment as part of its design. In addition to providing the residents of Redmond with quality visual art, Redmond Town Center has sponsored a summer series of musical performances that have helped foster a sense of community.''

Berns said Redmond Town Center has created a gathering place for City residents to join together, pointing out the fountains, sculptures and other interesting artistic elements that both entertain and inspire the residents of Redmond.

''Being recognized and embraced by members of this community is extremely rewarding to Redmond Town Center,'' said Julia Ladd, general manager of Redmond Town Center.

Redmond Town Center has contributed to the arts community since its opening two years ago by sponsoring the ''Hummin' through Summer'' concert series, holiday entertainment from local community groups and public performances from The SecondStory Repertory, a local resident theater. The Center has also worked with local schools in showcasing their artworks through Youthfest '98 and the Horace Mann Elementary Artwalk.

Last month, Redmond Town Center received the ICSC Design and Development Award, established to recognize excellence in the field of shopping center design and development. Redmond Town Center is a 1.2 million square foot retail and office complex serving Redmond's shopping and business needs. While preserving environmental treasures, the development of Redmond Town Center has also revitalized downtown Redmond with added office, public, retail and hotel uses.

Redmond Town Center is located just 12 miles northeast of downtown Seattle and was acquired by the Macerich Company in February. It opened August 1997 to better serve the residents of Redmond. Redmond is the geographic center of one of the most affluent trade areas in western Washington and has a strong economic business base as it is home to many major high tech, biotech and retail companies, including computer giant Microsoft.
